The Legacy Content Port Report

So, we get asked --"How's it going republishing the content from the old site?" Reasonably well, thank you, if slower than we'd like. New old content does show up pretty regularly though, and if you're missing an old friend it's worthwhile to check to see if it has reappeared recently.

The original goal was to focus on the highest traffic content that the site has generated in its 8 year history. This lead to a smattering of content across the major catagory types (Articles, Interviews, and Reviews). Thus almost immediately available were ATI Xenos: XBOX 360 Graphics Demystified and our interviews with Jen-Hsun Huang and Dave Orton. Also Rys' ultimate geekery article of /. fame, Origin of Quake3's Fast InvSqrt()

The next goal was to get as many pieces back up as rapidly as possible. This lead to focusing on the Interviews, which have been completed for some weeks. Next, we moved to Articles, and that section is nearing completion (three or four left to go).

Thus, soon, you should begin to see the Reviews section filling up to its old volume again as our efforts concentrate there. That content, as is Beyond3D's wont, is typically much longer and full of tables, so the going will be slower, in all likelihood. However, we've had a recent offer of some more resources, so hopefully that will help to compensate.

A few more notes, not quite at random. "Rummaging in Beyond3D's attic" (as it were), has lead to correcting some content dates back to what they should have been even at the old site (they got to be incorrect from a previous port to a new backend, apparently), and some reorganization of content by catagory. . . oh, and even the re-finding of one old article that had been misplaced!

Regarding the reorganization of content by catagory, old c/o/d/g/e/r/s/ timers will recall that the old site had both a "Previews" and a "Reviews" section. The distinction was intended to represent the difference between discussion of a reference board (Previews) vs the discussion of a retail package available to consumers (Review). Well, the industry has moved on a bit since then, and we've decided to do away with that distinction and place both kinds of content in the "Reviews" section.

Also, because we've had so much fun blowing the dust off some of these old gems that cover such a substantial portion of the entire history of 3D graphics, we're going to make it a bit easier for folks to kill a spare few minutes with a trip down graphics technology's memory lane. At some point in the future, a random content transporter will appear on the front page to further assist you in avoiding doing any useful work in your day.

Lastly, we will endeavor to keep you apprised on a regular basis as additional new old content continues to come online.
