NVIDIA ranked 3rd in fabless semiconductor industry

NVIDIA have been ranked 3rd by revenue again in the fabless semiconductor industry by the Fabless Semiconductor Association (FSA). The ranking is based on first quarter revenues in all markets this year, with only Qualcomm and Broadcom, competitors of the graphics company in some markets, ahead.

NVIDIA's position is strengthened by strong graphics product revenues in recent times, and with their D3D10 line-up now almost completely fleshed out, we expect their Q2 showing in the same list to take them even closer to Broadcomm's number 2 placing.

The acquisition of ATI by AMD has seen them removed from the list, although they''d have placed in the middle. EETimes report that the fabless industry as a whole has seen its revenue decline slighly, year-on-year, and more severely quarter-on-quarter.  The quarter-on-quarter revenue drop is largely seasonal, though, and nothing too out of the ordinary.

Contrary to that, though, there's been growth in the number of fabless semiconductor startups, with 38 companies raising over half a billion dollars to get their ventures off the ground in Q1 this year alone.
