The Valve presentation at NPAR (Non-Photorealistic Animation and Rendering) 2007, part of SIGGRAPH, on Team Fortress 2 and its renderer and art style has popped up on Shacknews.

The presentation, narrated by Jason Mitchell, discusses the character lighting model, world geometry style and the art and texture direction used by the team creating Team Fortress 2.

The bulk of the talk centers on the lighting model, where Jason describes how they build up the lighting algorithm for character models, from the reflection term all the way to the artist-controlled rim highlights for bringing out silhouette edges, something which defines a big part of the NPR style that Source gives to TF2.

World model geometry is discussed, where contrasting styles for buildings and the material system contribute to focused visual cues on which team things belong to. Jason then discusses the texture style used by the artists to guide the aesthetic look of everything in the world, before Heavy Weapons Guy gets his laugh on while mowing down the opposition in the final seconds.

It's well worth a watch, and we urge folks to download the standalone non-streaming version from Fileshack to get the best look at it.
