AMD 780G integrated graphics core logic released

AMD have been busy on the graphics front, releasing not only Crossfire X and the 3870 X2 recently (review soon), but a new IGP for their processors, raising the bar on what can be expected from an integrated 3D part in terms of performance.

As usual, our partners in hardware analysis crime took a good look, Geoff at the helm this time. He takes a look at what it means for 780G to be based on 55nm, hints that 780G isn't the pinnacle of what AMD have to offer in the IGP space in the coming months, despite its high performance, and covers a good spread of video and 3D performance tests.

780G supports Hybrid Crossfire, teaming up with a discrete Radeon in another slot on the mainboard, and the HD video performance seems peerless in the space it plays.

From the review:

"AMD scores a perfect 130 here, nailing each and every one of the HQV tests. The G35 Express doesn't fare as well, managing a score of only 70. I'm not entirely happy with how that score reflects the G35's actual performance, though. HQV's tests rely on arbitrarily subjective scoring, and in many of its tests, flickering problems on the G35 that degraded the overall viewing experience didn't actually meet the criteria for a lower score."

That video playback performance underpins the 780G's core appeal. It's not a gaming monster, although it does outclass Intel G35 by some distance there. Rather the chip's prime target will be HTPC systems, likely packed with a Phenom and a Blu-Ray reader. The output options make it more than worth it, at least on the board they had hosting the 780G itself.

SB700 is a little weak, but it doesn't really detract. You can find the full review over at The Tech Report.
