AMD quad-core ''Barcelona'' shipping in August

AMD updated yesterday its schedule on its new quad-core Opteron, code-named “Barcelona,” availability. AMD’s new quad-core X86 is expected to ship in August this year, while OEM systems, powered by a “Barcelona” CPU, will arrive in September this same year.

Claimed to be the world’s first x86 CPU to integrate four cores on a single die, this new line of Opteron processors will be available at launch in a range of frequencies going up to 2.0 GHz for the high-end model. New parts operating at higher frequencies are expected to ship, in both standard and special edition versions, by Q4 2007.

For the first time for an AMD processor launch, standard and low power versions of this new Opteron will be made available at the same time. These new quad-core Opteron CPUs are also expected to function within the same thermal envelopes as current dual-core Opteron CPUs. It seems AMD put the emphasise on the energy-efficiency nature of their “Barcelona” based offerings.

“More than ever before, customers are expecting energy-efficiency and performance-per-watt leadership as much as absolute performance. With this new reality of computing, greater performance at the expense of greater power consumption is no longer an option,” said Randy Allen, vice president, Server and Workstation Division at AMD.
