AMD’s current high-end offering in the desktop space, the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ (Windsor core, 90nm, 3GHz, 2MiB L2 cache), is expected to hand over its flagship title to a new variant of the Athlon 64 X2 family, the Athlon X2 6400+. This new part has the mission to take on the new high-end dual-core part from Intel, the Core 2 Duo E6850.

Citing sources close to motherboard manufacturers, DigiTimes reports that the chip will run at 3.2GHz and have 2MiB of L2 cache. The report does not mention the fabrication process used for this part, but based on the current A64 X2 offering the part should have a Windsor core fabricated on a 90nm SOI process.

The sources noted that according to the first tests, the A64 X2 6400+ is 10-15% slower than the Core 2 Duo E6850. It seems these results are on par with the price difference between the two chips. The 6400+ should ship for $220-248 while the E6850 goes for $266, making the AMD part between 8 and 17 percent cheaper than Intel’s counterpart.

Samples are already available to motherboard makers. The Athlon 64 X2 6400+, probably the last entry in the Athlon 64 X2 family, should start shipping soon.
