Sony Computer Entertainment America announced yesterday version 1.2 of its Folding@Home software client, bringing numerous feature updates to the Playstation 3 application. Chief among these, users will now be able to take advantage of 'RemotePlay' connectivity via the Playstation Portable to commence, halt, and view folding operations remotely from anywhere in the world.

Additional benefits come in the form of expanded visualization modes, with 'Tapioca' displaying the protein as a depth-defined smooth surface, 'Caviar' displaying a smooth surface with defined edges, 'Licorice' displaying only the bonds, and 'Backbone' highlighting specific topographical areas of scientific interest on the protein. SCEA and Stanford have also added a wider range of proteins to the existing typeset the PS3 is able to address, and added "advanced participation mode" for users that consider themselves more dedicated than the average folder. Recommended for users that spend over eight hours a day performing folding operations, under 'advanced' mode Sanford sends users computationally intensive simulations expected to take significantly longer to complete relative to the typical workload.

As of this writing, the Playstation 3 was contributing 65% of the active total for all Folding@Home operations, or 493 TFLops.
