AMD makes big comeback in US retail

TGDaily have sight of a report from "competitive response" analysts, Current Analysis, that says AMD grabbed a sizeable chunk of the US retail PC market in July.

According to the report, AMD grabbed a near 50% revenue share of the retail PC market in North America in July, via OEM partners like HP and Gateway, capturing a good chunk of the back-to-school sales for last month.

TGDaily mention that even though AMD-powered PCs aren't that much cheaper than equivalent Intel-powered models, a 48.4% revenue share was claimed anyway, which might indicate a resurgence in AMD processor sales, at least in the NA territory. A lower ASP means that 48.4% revenue translates to a higher volume share of 66.6%.

The report also says July was a record month for AMD in terms of notebook volume share, with 44.8% of the market in terms of units, up nearly 12 points. It'll be interesting to see if Current Analysis's numbers translate to good performance when it comes time for AMD to present their Q3 results.

Thanks to TGDaily for the tip.
