Four weeks after the launch of the Radeon HD 2900, AMD has announced that the Radeon HD 2600 (RV630) and 2400 (RV610) are now shipping to board manufacturers. According to the press release, cards should be available in a few weeks from vendors "including Asus, Club 3D, Diamond Multimedia, GeCube, Gigabyte, HIS, MSI, Palit, PowerColor, Sapphire and VisionTek." The HD 2600 features 120 stream processors (in the same way that the HD 2900 has 320 stream processors) and a 128-bit bus, and the HD 2400 features 40 stream processors and a 64-bit bus.

Also in the press release is a note about UVD, AMD's dedicated video decoding chip. For those of you who missed it, UVD's presence in the HD 2900 series was the subject of some debate; it was eventually confirmed that UVD was not found on the HD 2900, although the HD 2900 features the same Avivo HD decoding found on the R580 series. AMD has again stated in this press release that UVD is present on the HD 2600 and 2400 but not the HD 2900 "due to the usage patterns of this high end product." AMD argues that the faster processors that will naturally be paired with the HD 2900 are capable of decoding high-definition content in software. However, the slower CPUs that will be coupled with the HD 2600 and 2400 cards need UVD support in order to decode high-definition content without dropping frames.

We'll have a full investigation of the chips as soon as boards become available.
