AMD announces first GPU with native DisplayPort 1.1

AMD announced that VESA has qualified one of its upcoming GPUs as the first from any manufacturer to natively support the DisplayPort 1.1 standard. While neither party has announced which GPU was used, we believe that the RV620, the successor to the RV610, was the chip behind this announcement. This means that the RV620, expected to appear within six months, will support the full range of DisplayPort 1.1 products, including interconnects built using CMOS photonics.
Displays that support DisplayPort 1.1 seem to be a little further out. Samsung, the only vendor to announce a DisplayPort display at this point, plans to release a 30" monitor in Q2 2008. While other vendors have expressed their support for the standard, no other products have been announced.
