AMD Radeon HD 3870 and 3850 First Look

After nearly 6 months of delays, the RV670 has fina... Oh snap! Let's try that again, shall we? Originally scheduled for a January launch, the RV670 has arrived two months early, and is now available in stores.

We look at what makes it tough in today's piece, telling you everything you need to know about the HD 3850 and 3870 except performance data, which we look forward to analyzing extensively in the next few weeks.

The RV670 is manufactured on an aggressive 55nm process at TSMC, and the bet certainly paid off this time: the first spin (A11) worked flawlessly and performance is pretty much exactly where it should be, despite a nearly minuscule die size of 192mm², smaller even than the 7900 GTX's 196mm² on 90nm.
