Intel release faster desktop quad-core processor

A little belated perhaps, given the release date on Monday, but Intel have upped the frequency of their fastest quad-core desktop processor to create the 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800. Running at the same external freq. as the dual-core Core 2 Extreme X6800, the new processor debuts at $1199, letting the older QX6700 retain its $999 pricing. Ouch.

Nevertheless, it further's Intel's multi-core performance lead on the desktop for 1P systems, bringing the count of quad-core offerings from the chip giant in the consumer space to 3. Their Core 2 Quad Q6600 remains their cheapest quad-core part, running each of its two processing dice at 2.4GHz.

The X-men have their usual great review, Tarinder covering all the bases to set out the current desktop CPU status quo. The guys at The Tech Report do a great job too, Damage getting his groove on in the intro.
