Bringing you up-to-date on console sales worldwide, we have compiled data for two major regions, North America and Japan. In both markets Nintendo experienced strong sales of its current handheld, the Nintendo DS and its new home console, the Wii. Moreover, following a price cut Sony's PlayStation Portable has established itself in the third place in North America and Japan.

U.S.A.:

NPD U.S. Sales Numbers May

Nintendo DS
423,100
Wii 338,200
PlayStation Portable
212,100
PlayStation 2
187,800
Xbox 360 154,900
PlayStation 3 81,600
GameBoyAdvance 80,600
Nintendo Gamecube
10,800

Compared to the previous month, sales have generally slowed down with the exception of Sony's PlayStation Portable which profited from a price cut, while Nintendo's flagships, the DS and the Wii, continue to lead the sales charts.
Sony's PlayStation Portable reclaimed the third place after a price cut. A fact also noticed by Sony which also attributes faster sales "to the April price drop to $169, as well as our new marketing efforts with the 'Dude Get Your Own' campaign." (Dave Karraker, SCEA Sr. Director, Corporate Communications). Sony's PlayStation 2 also showed stable sales with almost 190,000 units sold in May. Sony's next-gen effort, PlayStation3, however, had another months of slow sales, just barely selling more units than the 6 year old GameBoy Advance.
Microsoft's Xbox360 decreased slightly to 155,000 units sold, in line with the general trend. While Microsoft moved almost twice as much units than its HD competitor Sony's PlayStation 3, Peter Moore, head of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business division, voiced concerns over MS target demography in the face of Wii's success: "If we don''t make that move, make it early and expand our demographic, we will wind up in the same place as with Xbox 1, a solid business with 25 million people. What I need is a solid business with 90 million people."

Canada:

NPD Canada Sales Numbers May

Wii 37,300
Nintendo DS
35,900
PlayStation 2
18,200
PlayStation Portable
15,000
Xbox 360
12,300
PlayStation 3 6,500
GameBoyAdvance 6,100

Similar to the US market trends Canadian sales decreased compared to April 2007, with the sole exception of Sony's PlayStation Portable. Sony's PlayStation 2 and Nintendo's DS also had moderate gains. The Top3 itself is still comprised of Wii, DS and PS2, with Wii leading the pack.

Console sales in Japan remain stable at the top. Both DS Lite and Wii sales fluctuates around 120,000 units sold, respectively 60,000 units sold, on a weekly basis.
Sony's PlayStation Portable has established itself firmly on the third place with sales hovering around 25,000 units sold per week. Meanwhile PlayStation 2 is continuing to stay ahead of its next-gen successor, PlayStation3 whose sales remain stagnant and below 10,000 units sold per week. During May PlayStation 3 was outsold by its competitor Wii by a 5 to 1 margin, prompting a reaction from Howard Stringer, chairman and C.E.O. of Sony Corp., about Sony's pricing strategy.
Microsoft's Xbox 360's sales stagnate at 2,000 units sold per week. Even the release of Xbox's eagerly awaited Forza 2 failed to make any significant inroad on the Japanese market. The release of the more Japan centric RPG Trusty Bell: Chopin no Yume on June 14th, however, could change that.
