During an update of its network content, Sony made available a new firmware version for its console.A new video format playback support was added, as well as the backward compatibility functions of the console were updated for some games.

The new video format supported for playback from the XMB menu is the high-end AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) format. Now users can read videos, stocked on their local discs or over their DLNA network, encoded with this profile of the H.264 format.

The other change log point concerns the improvement of the compatibility of some PlayStation 1 and 2 games. Also noteworthy, the online stability of some PS2 games that support the feature was improved as well. Futhermore, the PS3 backward compatibility status list for PS1 and PS2 games has been updated accordingly.

The update can be downloaded directly from the XMB menu or from the PlayStation website.
