A year after the introduction of its successful Core processors line, Intel announced today the availability of a new high-end mobile CPU, the Core 2 Extreme X7800 mobile. Following the nomenclature established for Intel’s bleeding edge desktop processors, this new mobile dual-core based on the Merom architecture runs at 2.6 GHz, has 4MB of L2 cache and does not feature any bus ratio lock, which should cause rejoicing amongst the fans of overclocking out there.

Intel claims that this new mobile processor is up to 28 percent faster than a Core Duo T2600, the previous mobile mobile performance crown vessel from Intel, in 3DMark06's CPU test. The Core 2 Extreme X7800 is already available to original equipment manufacturers (OEM) for the price of $851 (€618). This price is of course per units for orders made in 1,000-Unit Quantities.

Looking further ahead, Intel expects to announce mobile quad-core solutions next year.
