Intel introduces new Core processors; new flagship revealed

In a common press release issued today, Intel announced its new laptop high-end CPU, the Core 2 Extreme X7800, but also new desktop parts. These desktop parts include the new company flagship, the Core 2 Extreme QX6850 quad-core processor.
Shipping immediately to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), this set of new Core processors, from top-to-bottom, includes the quad-core processors Core 2 Extreme QX6850 and Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700, which run run respectively at frequencies of 3 GHz and 2.66 GHz for the cores, and 1333 MHz and 1066 MHz for the front side buses. Both of the quad-core processors support 8 MB of L2 cache memory.
The dual-core offerings are comprised of the 3 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo E6850, the 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo E6750 and the 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo E6550. All these Core 2 Duo processors will have a front side bus set at 1333 MHz and 4 MB of L2 cache.
These new Core processors are making their entry into the market a year after the arrival of the original Core offerings, a CPU line that has experienced great market and critical successes since its inception. It is noteworthy that after only a year on the market, the Core line of processors has nearly taken over half of the Top500 list.
