Wal-Mart to go Blu-ray exclusive

Retail giant Wal-Mart today made the bombshell announcement that beginning in June, it will no longer stock HD DVD hardware or software, backing Blu-ray exclusively as its pick for the next-generation successor to DVD. This announcement itself caps off what has been a week filled with grim news for the HD DVD format, with Netflix revealing Monday that it would cease to stock new HD DVD releases, and Best Buy indicating later the same day that they would begin giving Blu-ray a distinct floorspace and mindshare advantage in their stores.

In addition, rumors stemming from a Hollywood Reporter article have begun to swirl that Toshiba themselves may already have decided to wave the white flag. Although the rumors remain unconfirmed, the increasingly hostile retail environment may force their hand on the matter if it was not already a consideration on the table for them.
