Notebook Chipset Market - Q406

About a week ago, we published a news piece on DRAMeXchange's market
share numbers for Q406, but noted that we found some of these figures
suspicious because they didn't match those previously provided by
Mercury Research. We contacted DRAMeXchange, and got a good explanation
on this discrepancy: Mercury Research most likely get their numbers
straight from the various chipset companies (AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, etc.)
while DRAMeXchange gets theirs from the Taiwanese motherboard
manufactuers, such as ASUS and MSI.
Furthermore, Mercury Research's numbers include both desktops and notebooks, while DRAMeXchange has separate reports for those two categories. It turns out that they recently released the Q406 notebook chipset figures too, and that they also help makes things clearer. In the desktop market, NVIDIA currently has significantly more market share than AMD, while it's pretty much the other way around in the laptop market; that's why Mercury Research's numbers are more balanced - but also a tad less informative.

- AMD: 2312K shipments, market share down from 9.5% in Q3 to 8.5% in Q4.
- NVIDIA: 1128K shipments, market share up from 3.1% in Q3 to 4.8% in Q4.
- VIA/SiS: 589K and 316K shipments, respectively. When extrapolating, that's 2.2% and 1.2% in Q4.
