Potential delay for AMD Phenom? AMD denies

AMD’s new front row processor line, Phenom, was expected to start shipping by Q4 2007. According to DigiTmes, several motherboard makers are now looking for a Q1 2008 release for the new processors after AMD informed them of a delay in the production of the Phenom processors.

The reason invoked for this delay would be changes AMD made to its fabrication process technology to improve yields and frequencies. This should allow for a better show of the Phenom against Intel''s new Core architecture, Penryn.

DigiTmes’ sources also went on record to say that this postponement of the Phenom family to early 2008 made motherboard manufacturers think about decreasing their shipments of AM2+ based motherboards in favour of the Intel platforms during that period. It goes without saying that a move like this by the mobo makers would displease AMD much.

AMD on its end made public that Phenom was still a second half 2007 product and that the official schedule has not been changed in any way. The company also noted that it did not contact its motherboard partners to inform them of a potential delay in the production of its Phenom processors.
