AMD license mobile graphics technology to Qualcomm

Industry heavyweight Qualcomm has licensed 3D graphics technology from AMD, for use in its mobile processor designs.

In a press release sent out by AMD today, Qualcomm are (finally) officially named as the next big licensee of AMD's mobile programmable 3D graphics IP, based on their unified shader architecture.

This follows hot on the heels of the announcement a couple of weeks ago that Freescale is licensing the same tech. The technology lets Qualcomm provide support for OpenGL ES 2.0, the soon-to-be prevalent graphics API for embedded graphics systems. Unlike Freescale, however, they don't seem to have licensed OpenVG technology from AMD at the same time.

The phone handset market seems to be teetering on the cusp of another spurt in growth as far as content development goes, for 3D apps and games. That's largely because of the ease of programmability and performance that'll be offered by implementations of coming technology like AMD's unified shader.

So here's hoping the licensed IP from AMD finds its way into a slew of released products sooner rather than later. However, given the glacial pace that the phone market moves in terms of hardware, holding your breath for it isn't advised.
