Serious Sam: Second Encouter (OpenGL)

Here we'll look at SS:SE under OpenGL.

9700 PRO 110.5 109.2 106.8 99.7 86.2
8500 110.5 106.2 90.3 65.5 42.5

FPS 0 3 16.5 34.2 43.7
% 0% 3% 18% 52% 103%

The 'Extreme' settings of SS:SE are fairly taxing, even without anisotropic filtering. While the Radeon 8500 shows a reasonable performance drop off in performance at 1024x768, the 9700 extends that showing a small drop at 1280x1024 and a slightly larger drop at 1600x1200. However, at 1600x1200 the 9700 PRO is still averaging at 86FPS, which is in excess of double 8500's performance.

Normal 110.5 109.2 106.8 99.7 86.2
16X Aniso 114.3 109.0 107.8 98.2 78.9
4XFSAA 109.8 107.6 99.1 77.9 53.3
16X Aniso & 4X FSAA 112.7 108.4 98.1 74.0 50.6

16X Aniso 3% 0% 1% -2% -8%
4XFSAA -1% -1% -7% -22% -38%
16X Aniso & 4X FSAA 2% -1% -8% -26% -41%

With anisotropic filtering enabled SS:SE shows a modest drop in performance only at 1600x1200. Things start to get a little more taxing with FSAA enabled, dropping down to 53FPS at 1600x1200. Again, enabling FSAA and anisotropic filtering shows another minor drop, though again the drop from normal rendering to anisotropic filtering is higher than FSAA rendering to FSAA with anisotropic filtering.
