UMC to manufacture NVIDIA G92 GPU

The world and its dog is reporting that UMC have secured an order from NVIDIA for production of G92. Digitimes appeared to break the news.

Calling around confirms it, so it seems Fab 12A, UMC's only 12 inch (300mm) fab producing ICs at 65nm, is going to be busy. 12A can knock out 40K starts a month, and sources at UMC say the order secures 15-20% of monthly capacity at 12A.

Arun did some die estimate math in our G92 discussion thread based on that data.

With TSMC in volume production for G92 already, NVIDIA dual-sourcing manufacture in Taiwan seems to indicate it anticipates large volume demand of the GPU, following its launch later this month.
