Tidbits from ATI, NVIDIA and Ageia at CES 2007

Anandtech has a fairly extensive CES writeup, containing comments from many of the major players at the show. ATI demonstrated their latest TV tuner, the Open Cable Unidirectional Receiver, or OCUR. The OCUR's major feature is the support for the CableCard specification, which will allow it to display premium and cable HD content. However, the OCUR will rely on Vista's much-maligned protected video path and will be an OEM-only product for the time being.

Speaking of Vista, NVIDIA made some comments regarding support for the new operating system at the convention as well. According to the article, no Vista driver for the G80 series will be released until the retail launch. G80 also signals the end of the unified driver architecture that has been a hallmark of NVIDIA cards for years. Such a break between the G80 driver and the drivers for older products is credible, considering that G80 is NVIDIA's first complete redesign of the rendering pipeline since the original GeForce 256 debuted in 1999. In addition, the Inquirer first reported this rumor almost a month ago.

As well as some Vista-related comments, Anandtech spotted some unannounced NVIDIA cards courtesy of new Asus laptops--the G84-based GeForce 8600 and the (presumably) G86-based GeForce 8400 and 8300. Both chips are expected to be released in Q2 2007.

Finally, Ageia announced that it would take a far more active role in supporting game developers' use of PhysX, with guidelines on how PhysX must affect the gameplay experience. However, it still stated that as of now, only three AAA titles to be released in 2007 would make extensive use of PhysX, which does not bode well for widespread acceptance.
