We're a little late to the party in terms of reporting the news, Beyond3D's [maven] let the forums know that Microsoft had demonstrated some new visualisation technologies at TED this year.

Seadragon is the rendering technology behind a product called Photosynth, a system that (among other things) lets you do real-time 3D visualisation of a subject from random static photographs taken of it, collected from the web.

The 3D goodies center around real-time rendering of massive multi-megapixel images, via what appears to be a very smart memory paging algorithm combined with MIP mapping.

As a technology demo presented, it's highly impressive, but there's also a live demonstration available via Microsoft research labs, so you can try it out yourself.

TED is an ideas symposium where everything from technology to global problems are discussed, giving new perspectives to attendees on all manner of subjects.
